'Higher' Music Video Synopsis

My music video for ‘Higher’ will follow a strong narrative. After closely watching and analysing music videos by Ed Sheeran, Catfish and The Bottlemen and Birdy, I have discovered that these artists take a more narrative approach whilst incorporating a performance element. This is done as the production can be created on a low budget and the artist can show off their musical talent by being seen playing their own instruments. They also follow Andrew Goodwin’s theory of amplifying and illustrating key lyrics to visually tell the meaning of the song to the audience.
‘Cocoon’ and ‘Give me love’ both have a strong narrative. In ‘Cocoon’ the protagonists are trapped in a rehabilitation centre and are trying to escape together whereas ‘Give me Love’ follows Cupid who is able to give out love but cannot receive it. Both of these story lines entices the audience and keeps them engaged until the end of the video.
After much thought and research, I have decided to base my music video around a well-known classic, Peter Pan. I believe that this narrative will be effective as the meaning of the story has similar themes to my chosen song. I also feel that after watching other music videos in this genre, I can take a modern twist on a classic story on a low budget and within the time I have to finish the final product.

HIGHER SYNOPSIS

The video will begin with a young Peter Pan wondering around ‘Neverland’.  At first he is alone or sometimes seen around his friends ‘The Lost Boys’, but he is seen to feel comfortable and content. This will show off Peter’s love for his home. Although Peter enjoys his lifestyle, it is evident that he is longing for someone special to share it with other than his small group of friends.
In the second section of the video, Peter meets Wendy. Wendy is around the same age as Peter and meets him during his search for his shadow. At first Wendy is reluctant to be-friend Peter as he appears boastful and egocentric, but is later convinced to run away to Neverland with him. They soon build a strong friendship and bond over the same fears of growing up lonely, however their feelings soon develop, especially Peter’s.
Throughout the duration of the video Peter does his very best to encourage Wendy to stay with him and shows her all the fun they can have together. Wendy enjoys rebelling against her expected role and enjoys sharing her time with Peter. As the song comes to an end, Wendy realises that although likes living in Neverland, she worries that she will never get the opportunity to grow up and experience her life if she stays. She decides to leave, but gives Peter a kiss (a thimble) and promises to return in the future.
The video finishes with Peter reflecting back on the time he spent with Wendy, but he does not feel angry. Instead he stays in Neverland and begins to enjoy his life beforehand, waiting for Wendy to return.

  1. Some good thinking and justification of ideas. I like the fact you have built a relationship with the artist and are considering ideas in line with his intentions for the song. This is exactly the sort of thing the record label and director would do in the industry.
